Hello and welcome to snaptured, please introduce yourself, and tell us about your career in photography, and how did you get into this?
Hello, I’m Dr Sreekumar Mahadevan Pillai, I’m not a photojournalist but a hobbyist photographer who happens to be a doctor by profession, neurosurgeon to be precise. I was interested in photography since childhood but never got enough time and resources to study about photography till about 8 years back when my daughter was born and I bought a point and shoot camera to take her pictures, some of the pictures of her I took came out well which rekindled the interest in me. I have no formal training, I studied most things through online resources.
You have a fantastic and inspiring portfolio can you tell us how you got started into macro and nature photography?
Macro photography was not my preferred choice to begin with, just like any other budding hobbyist I too was inclined towards wildlife, but soon I found that it’s not possible to get enough time for wildlife pursuing a busy profession of doctor, we used to live in a place which was ideal for macro since there were lots of trees , climbers , creepers , bugs, ants, spiders and everything in our backyard itself.
What genre of photography you like to do?
Macro and Portraits
What difficulties you face in the field of your photography?
Time constraints
What motivates you to take pictures and make them great?
Seeing works of legends in this field
Typical question, which image is your very best till now? We know all of your images are best but we want to know that one best image 🙂
It’s difficult for me to choose one, though i can say the below image is my best so far.
What gear you usually use and what makes it different from others
I’m a canon guy, my gear includes Canon 6D and 60 D , Canon 100 mm Macro, Kenko extension tubes, Raynoxdcr 250 for macro work, 70-200 Canon 2.8 is for portraits and canon 300 f4 with teleconverter for birds and wildlife
We see your photos are bit different, we really like the pastel colors in your photos, how do u get it? Do u use any filters or you use any presets/filters in lightroom?
I use photoshop mainly for enhancing pictures, the pastel colours are made by tweaking the sliders in hue/ saturation .
Do you like to do indoor/studio or outdoor Photography, and why?
I like both, I have a small studio setting at home where I do splash and high speed photography which allows me to experiment with flashes and apertures. Macro works are exclusively outdoor where natural light is the key
Which programs you use for editing purpose?
Lightroom, photoshop CS6, topaz and NIK Filters
What is the best advice you can give for the young upcoming photographers?
Rather than watching or reading tutorials it’s better to take out your camera and experiment yourself, develop a steady hand and stance, develop your own style of photography. Keep on clicking
Finally, what is your goal for life? As a photographer
To do a photo story which I can show my grandchildren and be proud of.
